Which Cat Vaccines Are Necessary?

Vaccines have been scientifically proven to protect your cat from certain infectious diseases that can threaten their health. At Westmonte Animal Clinic, we offer a wide range of vaccines to ensure your cat is safe from bacterial and viral infection.

We follow the guidelines set by the American Association of Feline Practitioners for core and non-core vaccinations. Core vaccinations are recommended for all cats, as they protect against common and potentially fatal diseases, while additional vaccines may be recommended based on your cat’s lifestyle, environment, and other exposure risks.

At Westmonte Animal Clinic, we’ll help you determine which vaccines are necessary for your cat based on their lifestyle and risk factors and potential side effects, ensuring they receive the best possible protection against disease.

Rabies

Rabies is a deadly virus that affects the nervous system and can be transmitted to humans.

In Florida, rabies vaccinations are required by law for all cats older than 4 months.

Feline panleukopenia

Also known as feline distemper, FPV is highly contagious and often fatal.

It is a highly contagious viral disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems.

Viral rhinotracheitis

Caused by the feline herpesvirus type 1, FVR is a highly contagious upper respiratory infection.

Even after they no longer show symptoms, cats can still spread the FVR virus.

Feline calicivirus

FCV can cause symptoms ranging from mild sneezing and nasal discharge to more severe conditions like oral ulcers and pneumonia.

It is highly contagious and cats can spread the virus while not showing symptoms.

Immunodeficiency vaccine

Immunodeficiency affects a cat’s immune system and can lead to chronic infections and other health issues.

The FIV vaccine is recommended for cats at high risk of exposure, such as those that roam outdoors or are in multi-cat households with FIV-positive cats.

Infectious peritonitis

FIP is a fatal disease caused by a mutated coronavirus. It primarily affects young cats and those living in multi-cat environments.

Your veterinarian can help determine if this vaccine is appropriate for your cat.

Leukemia virus

FeLV is a virus that can suppress the immune system and lead to cancer and other serious illnesses.

The FeLV vaccine is recommended for kittens and cats that spend time outdoors or are in close contact with other cats, as the virus is spread through close contact.

Chlamydia

This vaccine protects against a bacterial infection that primarily causes conjunctivitis and respiratory problems.

It is recommended for cats in multi-cat environments or shelters where the risk of transmission is higher.

Bordetella

Bordetella bronchiseptica is a bacteria that can cause respiratory infections.

It is recommended especially for cats that are housed in groups, such as in boarding facilities or shelters.

Kitten Vaccine Timeline

Proper care starts right from the beginning for your newest addition. For kittens, we recommend the following vaccination schedule to enhance protection while avoiding potential over-vaccination reactions.

1st round of vaccines, 8-9 weeks old: First FVRCP and FeLV boosters

2nd round of vaccines, 11-12 weeks old: Second FVRCP booster and annual FeLV booster

3rd (final) round of vaccines, 13-15 weeks old: Annual FVRCP vaccine and rabies vaccine
