Which Dog Vaccines Are Necessary?

Vaccinations utilize your dog’s immune system to help prevent serious diseases. At Westmonte Animal Clinic, we offer a wide range of vaccinations to ensure your dog receives the protection they need based on their lifestyle and risk factors.

Core vaccinations are recommended for all dogs, as they protect against common and potentially fatal diseases, while non-core vaccines maybe also be recommended based on their lifestyle, environment, and other exposure risks.

Westmonte Animal Clinic offers a range of core and non-core vaccines, including:

Rabies

Rabies is a fatal virus that attacks the nervous system and can be transmitted to humans.

In Florida, rabies vaccinations are required by law for all dogs older than 4 months.

Canine distemper

Canine distemper is an airborne disease that also affects racoons, ferrets, and other wild animals.

It is a highly contagious viral disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems.

Canine parvovirus

Parvovirus is a virus that causes gastrointestinal and heart illness, particularly in puppies.

It’s highly contagious and deadly, and it can survive in a contaminated environment for a long period of time.

Canine hepatitis

Canine hepatitis is a serious liver disease though it can also affect the kidneys, eyes, and blood vessels.

The symptoms range from mild if caught early to life-threatening.

Canine bordetella

Bordetella bronchiseptica causes kennel cough, a highly contagious respiratory infection.

This vaccination is recommended for dogs that frequently interact with other dogs, such as in boarding facilities, dog parks, or grooming salons.

Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can cause liver or kidney damage, even after treatment.

This vaccination is recommended for dogs that spend time outdoors, especially in areas with standing water or wildlife.

Canine influenza

Canine influenza is a contagious respiratory disease caused by the canine influenza virus.

This vaccination is recommended for dogs that are often around other dogs, such as in daycare, boarding, or group play settings.

Lyme disease

Lyme disease is transmitted by ticks and can lead to serious health problems.

This vaccination is recommended for dogs that live in or visit areas where ticks are prevalent, especially in wooded or grassy regions.

Puppy Vaccine Timeline

The natural antibodies a puppy gets from nursing will begin to fade when they are 6-8 weeks old. For puppies, we space out their booster shots, so there is less chance of a reaction.

For puppies, we suggest the following vaccination schedule:

1st round of vaccines, 8-9 weeks old: First distemper (DAPP) booster and Bordetella

2nd round of vaccines, 11-12 weeks old: Second distemper booster and first Leptospirosis booster

3rd (final) round of vaccines, 13-15 weeks old: Annual distemper booster and rabies vaccine
