Pet Dental Care in Altamonte Springs

Healthy smiles start with great dental care

Dental disease is the most commonly diagnosed health problem in dogs and cats — and one of the most overlooked. By age three, an overwhelming percentage of pets have some degree of periodontal disease, often without showing obvious signs of pain or discomfort. At Westmonte Animal Clinic, we take dental health seriously because what’s happening in your pet’s mouth affects far more than their teeth. Left untreated, dental disease can contribute to infections, chronic pain, and damage to the heart, kidneys, and liver.

What Dental Disease Looks Like and Why It’s Easy to Miss

Pets are remarkably good at hiding oral pain
A dog with a cracked tooth or significant gum disease will often keep eating, playing, and acting normally, which is exactly why routine dental evaluations matter. Signs that something may be going on include bad breath, yellow or brown buildup on the teeth, red or swollen gums, drooling, dropping food while eating, reluctance to chew on one side, or pawing at the mouth. If your pet has any of these symptoms, schedule an exam as soon as possible.

During every wellness exam, we assess your pet’s teeth and gums as part of the full physical. If we see signs of tartar accumulation, gingivitis, loose teeth, or other concerns, we’ll tell you what we’re seeing and what we recommend. We won’t talk you into a dental procedure your pet doesn’t need, but we won’t downplay one they do.

Professional Dental Cleanings Under Anesthesia

Safe anesthesia for dental procedures
A thorough dental cleaning requires general anesthesia. There’s no other way to ensure a complete, safe, and effective procedure. Anesthesia allows us to scale and polish every surface of each tooth, including below the gumline where tartar and bacteria do the most damage. It also allows us to take full-mouth dental X-rays to evaluate tooth roots and bone that aren’t visible above the gumline, probe for periodontal pockets, and extract any teeth that are fractured, infected, or no longer salvageable.

We perform a pre-anesthetic exam and recommend bloodwork before every dental procedure to confirm your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia and to customize the anesthetic protocol. Your pet’s vital signs are monitored throughout the entire procedure, and we take their comfort seriously every step of the way.
